Background
Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), also known as interstitial collagenaseand fibroblast collagenase, is an enzyme that belongs to MMP family. MMP-1 is the only enzyme able to initiate breakdown of the interstitial collagens, collagen type 1, collagen type 2, and collagen type 3. MMP-1 also cleaves a number of non-matrix substrates and cell surface molecules, suggesting a role in the regulation of cellular behaviour in addition to its role in the turnover of collagen fibrils. MMP1 has been shown to interact with CD49b.
