Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase, NAMPT called visfatin or PBEF, is a ubiquitous enzyme that functions differently intracellularly and extracellularly. Intracellular NAMPT is involved in the NAD biosynthesis pathway in the cytoplasm to regulate energy metabolism during stress responses and immune activation. Extracellular NAMPT is reported to be a cytokine that promotes B cell maturation and inhibits neutrophil apoptosis. Mouse NAMPT shows 96% and > 99% amino acid identity with human and rat NAMPT, respectively.
