Neutrophil Elastase (ELA2) is a serine protease and belongs to the chymotrypsin family. It is secreted mainly by the neutrophils and macrophages during inflammation and helps in the degradation of many extracellular matrix proteins. It is also involved in the degradation of proteins in azurophil granules (neutrophil lysosomes). ELA2 may be involved in lung emphysema, cystic fibrosis, the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), rheumatoid arthritis, tumor invasion and infectious diseases.
